Named by a Texas man named Shaffer who ran the post office and ferry. It is presumed to be called that in honor of the old Alamo of his native state. His ferry was not a large one and one day an outfit insisted on crossing all at once. Shaffer told them it was not strong enough but they loaded teams and wagons regardless, and the whole thing sank in the middle of the Big Horn. After that passengers had to be taken across in boats. Town is now known as Manderson.
