History:
Near Antelope Mountain is the grave of Frank Hammitt, one of the first forest rangers placed under appointment. He is said to have been accidentally killed either by falling or riding his horse over the precipitous canyon rim of Russell Creek. According to Jesse W. Nelson, one of the early rangers on the Shoshone, Hammitt was well educated, and spoke seven languages fluently. He was trained for priesthood, but took up the life of a cowboy. For years, he was a member of the Col. Cody’s show and chief of the cowboys, later becoming a ranger, in which capacity he served until his death on July 25, 1903.
