Origin of Name:

Named for the Arapahoe Indian tribe. Arapahoe was established by the Indian Service in 1880 as sub-agency for the Arapahoe tribe, who was placed on the eastern part of the Shoshone Reservation between the Big Wind and Popo Agie rivers in 1879. John C. Burnet operated a trading store there, which, at one time was the largest retail store in Fremont County.

The town was platted by the Pioneer Town Site Company and was named from a nearby Arapahoe Indian reservation. The name is that of a noted Indian tribe and signifies "traders."

Arapahoe Post Office was established as Arapahoe Agency Post Office on February 15, 1893 and its name changed to Arapahoe on May 12, 1906. John C. Burnett was the first postmaster.
