Origin of Name:
So called by the Shoshone Indians from the unexplained death of an Indian scout who had ascended the butte to scan the surrounding country for enemies. A search party discovered the scout, lying dead with his face on his folded arms. Since that time the butte has been known as “Bad Medicine Butte,” and no full blooded Shoshone will go to the top under any consideration.
