Peak, altitude 9,300 feet, Yellowstone National Park, ... . Named by the United States Geological Survey, 1895 for Capt. J. W. Barlow who was the leader of the military expedition of 1871, which traveled with the Hayden party, and recording many discoveries, went around Yellowstone Lake.

Named by the USGS in 1895 for Captain J.W. Barlow, who was leader of the military expedition of 1871. Barlow mapped the headwaters of the Snake River, and made a remarkable collection of photographs of great value which were destroyed in the great fire in Chicago.

History:

Captain J. W. Barlow of the United States Engineers Corps, was in charge of one division of the expedition of Dr. Hayden in 1871. Captain Barlow's collection of photographs, letters, etc. was destroyed in the great Chicago fire of that year, but the report was rewritten for the Chicago Journal and appeared in the issue of that paper for January 13, 1872. Barlow Peak was named for the Captain.
