History:
Bates' Hole is a basin in the plains, some sixty miles long and about one hundred to one hundred and fifty feet below the general level of the surrounding country. The bottom is mainly covered with sage-brush, which is largely "sheeped out" or grazed to the wood, the hole being a favorite resort of sheep, particularly in winter and in May, when lambing. There are several "lambing outfits," with their gypsy-like camp wagons, in the Hole at the time of our visit.
