Origin of Name:
Near the confluence of Battle Creek and Little Snake River, south of Battle Mountain, a party of American Fur Company trappers, including Henry Fraeb (Frapp) and Jim Baker, was attacked by Cheyenne and Sioux in 1841. Several trappers were killed.

Jim Baker, with a few companions, about 1841, were caught by Indians between Battle Creek and Snake River and a fierce battle ensued. The whites dug pits in the brush and stood them off for two days, killing some of them; the attack was abandoned and they all escaped.
