So named because it was nearby that a skirmish between the Indians and a posse of officers and settlers took place. It was not really a battle. Some of the Shoshone and Bannock Indians had been giving the settlers of Jackson Hole considerable trouble by killing game illegaly and acting in a very threatening manner so they were rounded up and arrested in 1895. As they were being brought back for trial the Indians made a dash for liberty. One Indian was killed but the others escaped. From this skirmish the mountain was named Battle Mountain.
