History:
Early in the summer of 1868 when the new town was announced, a host of people stampeded to that point. By November, the town contained a large population mostly of a rough element and as a consequence robbery and murder were frequent. Finally the better element organized a vigilance committee. Wholesale arrests were made and prisoners locked up in a temporary jail. The roughs, enraged, started a riot. Men belonging to other camps joined the riot but were promptly arrested and locked up. Armed men from the railroad camp released the prisoners and burned the jail and newspaper office. The police force was helpless in this emergency. Order was finally restored by troops.
