Origin of Name:
Named for George W. Beck, one of the first settlers on Big Goose Creek. When Beck first came to Wyoming, he engaged in farming and stock raising, but as the country around him settled up, and sufficient grain was raised, he built a flour mill and established a post office, naming it Beckton. The town followed closely the regular frontier pattern of the day, consisting of a postoffice, saloon, store and a handful of homes. Three years later, in 1882, Sheridan was founded and the city fathers of the town asked Beck to take his mill to Sheridan; Beck replied: "You bring your town to my mill". The uncooperative attitude of Beck's was frowned on by the thriving Sheridan council, and in the course of time, George Beck moved on to Cody, leaving the ghost of a town behind him.
