Origin of Name:
A marvelous view of Thermopolis and a large portion of the southern Big Horn Basin may be had from the base of Black Butte, which lies at a distance of about three miles east of Thermopolis. The road which leads from Thermopolis to the base of Black Butte, so called for its dark color, climbs approximately 1,000 feet in about three miles, through fine grass country.
