Origin of Name:
This peak is about forty miles northeast of Thermopolis. It was once known as Cookeley’s Peak but since has become known as Black Mountain. This name is much more fitting for it is a large, bare, black looking mountain sitting off by itself. It was once a part of the Lysite Range but at some period in the earth’s history it was broken off from this chain and has now become a landmark as it can be seen for miles. On its north slope a number of oil wells have been drilled which produce heavy black oil.
