Origin of Name:

In the early days, when wild horses roamed the range, a handsome, black stallion led his herd along the banks of Black Thunder Creek, which was yet to be named. Sheriff Johnny Owens of Newcastle was riding with a companion in the vicinity of the creek one day when the beautiful, black stallion leaped from a draw and swept past them like wind. “Look”, exclaimed one of the men, “there goes Black Thunder!” The creek was so named.
