It lies north of the Gros Ventre River, east of the Snake, and southeast of Menors Ferry. The main ridge is composed of limestone. The location has long been called Blacktail Butte because the broad, extensive flats on the summit are a favorite range, at some seasons, for herds of Blacktail Deer.
