Origin of Name:
Named by the Indians for the roaring noise coming from its depths; they believed that the roar came from a herd of buffalo that tried to cross the ice of the lake one winter but broke through and drowned. A white bull that led the herd was especially sought by the Indians, and a tribesman believed that his roaring was the noise heard from the lake.
