When the first Mormon families came to the Greybull valley they settled in a bend in the river that came to be called Mormon Bend. The location for a townsite was selected some seven miles east of that place. Thomas W. Jones, who came with his father's family in 1893, tells how Burlington came to be named. "I remember the day well, although I was only ten years old. The men were sitting around on some logs in the shade of the trees. There were several suggestions as to what to call the town and finally old man Martin Black suggested they call the town Burlington after an old Burlington railroad survey that had been run up through the valley before that."
