The monument marking this station is on the north bank of the Sweetwater River, at the site of the Burnt Ranch Stage and Pony Express Station. The Indians attacked and burned this station in the 1860's, which gave it the name, "Burnt Ranch". This was the junction with the Lander cut-off on the north side of the river, and the junction of the two branches of the Oregon Trail up the Sweetwater on the south side.
