Named in 1863. Prospecting party under one Austin were in camp on this stream when they were surprised by Indians, and all their stock stolen except one or two mules. Being unable to carry all their baggage from this point, they cachedwhat they could not place on the mules, or could not themselves carry. From this circumstance arose the name.
