General Crook, in preparation for a long campaign, after his advance had been stopped by Crazy Horse at the Rosebud in 1876, ordered a series of supply depots established between his camp on Goose Creek and the base at Fort Fetterman. Cantonment Reno, three miles north of abandoned Fort Reno, was one of these. In the spring of 1877, the cantonment was moved from Powder River to Clear Creek and renamed Fort McKinney.
