Careyhurst was named after the late Joseph M. Carey, founder of one of Wyoming's first families, and a man who served his state as both governor and senator and whose son, Robert D. Carey, also filled both high positions. Joseph Carey originally was a young lawyer in Philadelphia who stumped the east for General Grant during the latter's successful campaign for the presidency. As a reward, young Carey was appointed territorial district attorney for Wyoming.
