Origin of Name:
Cokeville was once a trading post for trappers and Indians. The first white settler was John Bourns who came in 1874. Originally called “Smith’s Fork”, the name was changed to Cokeville because of the large deposits of coking coal nearby.

A town on the Oregon Short Line Railroad in Uinta County, 42 miles northwest from Kemmerer. Pleasantly located at the junction of Bear River and Smith's fork, near the Sublette Mountain Range and Rocky Point Mountain. Splendid hunting and fishing. Coal is found in abundance here, and there are some undeveloped gold and silver properties. Cokeville is an extensive distributing and shipping point for stockmen.
