Origin of Name:

Cow Lake is a shallow depression in the plain south of Signal Mountain. It is a favorite watering place for cattle that range in that locality in the summer, hence its name. In particularly dry seasons it sometimes disappears entirely, while at other times it is nearly a half mile in length.
