Named for a mining promoter who abandoned the town and left for Texas. The name was later changed to Jelm.

On the grassy bottoms here, a city of 170 blocks was laid out in the 1870's, when John Cummins displayed ore samples, which he asserted he had found near by. A Denver company paid $10,000.00 for rights in the vicinity, only to find that Cummins had salted the area.

Cummins Post Office was established on May 26, 1880 with George W. Moore as its first postmaster. It was discontinued on August 10, 1888 at which time its mail was handled by Woods Post Office.
