Origin of Name:

Dayton, the historic town that grew up on the Bozeman Trail is located in Sheridan County and had a population of 180 at one time. The town was named after the middle name of Joseph Dayton Thorn. It was selected at a meeting of old settlers when the application was made for a post office there. Dayton was settled in 1882 when Henry Baker started a store and livery stable. Mary L. Shipp came with the Bakers and brought a building from Baker and began serving meals that year. Dayton was incorporated in 1907. In 1911 Mrs. Susan Wissler was selected mayor. She is said to have been the first woman mayor of an incorporated town in the United States.
