Origin of Name: Shortly after the Nez Perce outbreak in 1878 a small war party of Bannock was attacked by General Miles troop just south of the present site of Clark. The Indians retreated over what is now Dead Indian Hill, leaving one of their wounded behind. This unfortunate soul was found by some of Captain Bennett’s Crow Indian scouts who promptly and with much skill put him out of misery in short order. Until recent years a rude pile of stones half way down the west side of the hill north of the road and near the drift fence marked the grave. From this episode the hill received its name. Captain Bennett and Little Rock, one of his Crow scouts, were killed in this engagement. Two creeks running down the east face of Beartooth Plateau onto the flats below were named after these two men.
