Origin of Name:

On the Oregon Trail, five miles west from Independence Rock. The breadth of the chasm at the bottom is only about thirty feet; its depth is 330 feet and its width at this height is about 400 feet. This gorge has always been a very noted natural feature of that section of the country and has been known since 1812, when Robert Stuart and his party of six companions were here, on their way from Astoria to St. Louis. The walls of the gorge are of gray granite, very hard and compact. There is a black streak of granite running from the bottom to the top of the south ridge, which at first sight appears to be a roadway, and it will require close inspection to be convinced that it is but a freak of nature.
