Origin of Name:

Received its name from its location, which is in a basin with steep, unbroken walls which once afforded protection to herds of elk. The basin was named before the settlement of the town. The town resulted from the development of oil discoveries in the area.

History:

Elk Basin Post Office was established on July 7, 1916 with Magnus E. Juberg as postmaster. It was discontinued on April 30, 1956 and its mail then handled by the Powell Post Office.
