Elk Island, in Jackson Lake, is the unsubmerged top of a morainal hill. It was much larger before the building of the Jackson Lake Dam which raised the level of the lake much higher than it was in its natural state. Elk Island came to be so called because of the presence of small numbers of elk at some times of the year.
