Origin of Name:
During the long and difficult trek when emigrants followed the old Oregon Trail on their way to find new homes in the Far West, a spot which offered them even a small bit of protection from the elements and the hostile Indians, must have been a welcome haven. Emigrant Gap, a break on the Oregon Trail which led into a draw, at the bottom of which Poison Spider Creek flows, was an inviting spot to the weary travelers. From 1840 to 1867 thousands of the home seekers camped for the night in the protection of the rim-rock.
