Settled in 1873, was named for Fontenelle Creek, which received its name in honor of Lucien Fontenelle, one of the most romantic and adventurous of the early trappers in the area.

History:
Fontenelle Post Office was established in September, 1879 in Sweetwater County and discontinued in June, 1884. It was re-established in February, 1885 in Uinta County and discontined in March, 1968. Kemmerer Post Office then handled its mail.
