Fort Fred Steele was located on the North Platte River on the Union Pacific Railroad between Hanna and Rawlins. The fort was named for General Frederick Steele of Mexican and Civil War fame, who died January 12, 1868, and was used as a military post from June 30, 1868 to August 7, 1886.

Fort Fred Steele Post Office was established on July 10, 1868 with Lewis Lowry as its postmaster. It was discontinued on April 7, 1967 and its mail then handled by Rawlins Post Office.
