In 1870, after successfully completing surveys of Nebraska (1867) and Colorado and Wyoming (1868-1869), Ferdinand V. Hayden presented a plan to  Congress for a geological and geographical survey of the Territories of the United States. Congress approved and the Hayden survey then became the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories under the Department of the Interior. Publications of the Hayden Survey include significant information about the place names of Wyoming.

The First, Second and Third Annual Reports were republished in one volume in 1873.
