Origin of Name: Once called the Madison River. The Gibbon River is one of the three upper branches of the Missouri. Rising in Yellowstone Park, it is formed by the junction of the Gibbon and Firehole rivers, and at first flows north through a mountainous and rocky country; but in its lower reaches courses through a fertile valley.
