Origin of Name:

Green River is the county seat of Sweetwater County, and is beautifully situated on Green River, which, running for miles through narrow canons, spreads out here into a wide valley.

History:

Green River Post Office was established in December, 1853 in Green River County, Utah Territory. It was discontinued in April, 1855. It was established as Green River City Post Office in August, 1868 and its name changed to Green River in November, 1887. Its name was changed to Greenriver in November, 1895 and changed back to Green River in Noember, 1905.

An important city on the Union Pacific Railroad, 320 miles west of Cheyenne and 180 miles east of Ogden, division point and terminus of the Oregon Short Line. Extensive shops located here. County seat of Sweetwater County. Electric light, a good water system, excellent schools and fine churches, large costic soda works. Good hunting and fishing. Green River has the largest brewery in the state, and extensive steam sheep shearing plant and is the headquarters for the stockmen of Sweetwater County.
