Hamilton Dome is named for Dr. Hamilton, discoverer and first owner of the oil field nearby. The dome is seven miles long with 2,000 feet of closure, cut by several small faults.

Hamilton Dome had a post office established in July, 1925. It was originally established as Punteney in April, 1915. Hamilton Dome Post Office was discontinued in July, 1934 and the mail sent to Winchester.
