Named in honor of James Hoback, one of the most noted of the early hunters, beaver trappers and guides. In the early days, the Hoback Canyon was the main entrance from the east into Jackson Hole. It is sometimes mistakenly believed that John Hoback is buried in the grave marked by a pile of rocks just outside of the west end of the canyon but he was killed in an Indian massacre near the present site of Boise, Idaho.
