It was on this little mountain stream that a man named Hurlburt was almost hanged by a group of disappointed gold seekers who figured Hurlburt had misinformed them as to the gold to be found there. The incident took place in the early 1880's. The brook where the near hanging took place has been known as Hurlburt Creek ever since.
