The town of Kane had its beginning in 1906, when the Burlington Railroad reached the west side of the Big Horn River on its way to Kirby. A section house was built and a box car set off for a depot. Riley Kane was a foreman for the large M-L Cattle outfit on the east side of the river. In his honor the post office at the ranch was called Kane for a number of years. When the name was borrowed by the railroad the post office at the ranch became Watson and it was so designated until March 31, 1908 when it was discontinued. ... Kane became an important community and trading center for half a century or more. ... The community became a casualty of the 525 foot high Yellowtail Dam, built on the north end of the Big Horn Canyon ... in 1965.
