Origin of Name:

Named for Jacques La Ramie, French Canadian trapper, who reached a point on the river which bears his name, as early as 1820. LaramieCounty, with an organized government, is older than Wyoming as state and territory. It was created, in 1867, by the legislature of the Dakota Territory, and together with CarterCounty, occupied the area within the present boundaries of the state. County seat is in Cheyenne.

The city, as well as the river, the mountain range, and the county, derives its name from Fort Laramie, which stands at the mouth of Laramie River. The most famous fort on the old Overland Trail was named directly or indirectly for Jacques La Ramie, a French fur trader of the early days. The old maps show the river as La Ramies Fork.
