Named for Lysite Mountain, which received its name from Jim Lysite, a prospector and trapper who was killed by Indians near the site of his camp in 1876.

Lysite Post Office was established in March, 1914.

New and prosperous town on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railway in Fremont County, 80 miles west of Capser, and 55 miles miles southwest of Thermopolis; 80 miles northeast of Lander, the county seat. Principal industries cattle and sheep growing, with some ranching. Population 124. Altitude 5,000 feet.
