Located north of Fort Laramie. Named after John McGinnis, a road house owner near the pass on the Deadwood – Cheyenne stage lines. McGinnis was arrested on a charge of selling liquor without a license and was suspected of cattle stealing. While being taken to Cheyenne, as they neared the point where the road left Goshen Hole, McGinnis’ guard, Ben Morrison took McGinnis ahead of the party, ostensibly to talk with him. Instead, the detective shot the man, later saying that he had done so to prevent the prisoner’s escape.
