Origin of Name:
Canyon of the creek where paintings and carvings by Indians are on the face of a sheer sandstone cliff. A big encampment of Crow Indians wintered here in 1882. There were about 200 teepees and much “medicine was made.”

At this crossing of Medicine Lodge Creek was located the old Lum William's place, where in 1885 was effected the capture of the celebrated Jackson, from whom the Jackson Hole country in northwestern Wyoming takes its name. Jackson was wanted on an alleged horse stealing charge and was arrested by Frank Canton, then sheriff of Johnson County, and Chris Gross, a livestock association detective.
