Named in 1877 after Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, who was author of the Himalayan Journals and Journal of a Tour in Morocco and the Great Atlas. Mr. Dalton that year accompanied Dr. Asa Gray on a scientific tour through the Rocky Mountains and California.
