Origin of Name:

River, chiefly in Wyoming and Nebraska, originates at the junction of Grizzly and Little Grizzly Creeks in Jackson County, Colo., ... flowing thence northerly into Wyoming, to the Pathfinder Reservoir, northeast, east, and southeast through former Forts Casper, Fetterman, and Laramie, entering Nebraska ... and continuing southeast to its confluence with the South Platte River to form the Platte River.

The North Platte River takes its waters from the snow capped peaks of Colorado, through North Park, quickly entering Wyoming through its southern boundary, securing its major drainage as it passes through the valley created by the Medicine Bow Mountains on the east and the Sierra Madre Range of the Rocky Mountains on the west, meandering in a huge loop that nearly touches the center of the state, and finds its outlet on the eastern border no great distance from the southeastern corner of the state. It joins with the South Platte which flows more directly out of Colorado at North Platte, Nebraska, whence it becomes the Platte River.
