The naming of this peak shows something of the casualness and informality of western nomenclature. The Titcomb brothers upon their return, when asked where they had been, described the climb and told of drinking a bottle of Pabst beer on top, to Peter Sherlock, the blind brother of the storekeeper in South Pass City, and general clearinghouse for information. Sherlock ever afterward referred to the mountain as “Pabst Peak.”
