Named for the beautiful pines around the town. It is located at the foot of the Wind River Range.

Named by Charles Peterson in 1899, when the first post office was opened at this place, for the pines along the stream, Pine Creek. The town was incorporated in 1912 and was made the county seat in June 1921.
