Origin of Name:

Landmark on Bessemer Bend, about 13 miles west of Casper. Referenced in diary of Edward Egan with the Brigham Young expedition in 1847. Location was named by soldiers stationed at Fort Caspar in 1865, on account of the Red Buttes fight between soldiers and Indians in which Sergeant Amos Custard and eighteen of his men were killed.
