On this hill, on the old military road about 6 miles west from the City of Casper and four miles in a due westerly direction from Old Fort Caspar, Sergeant Amos J. Custard and eighteen of his men of the 11th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry were killed by several thousand Indians, who, a few hours earlier, had killed Lieutenant Caspar W. Collins and five of his comrades near Platte Bridge Station. The nineteen men were buried in two trenches where they were killed.
