What is now known as the Red Lane near Thermopolis was once called Stagner Flats. Speed Stagner, a Missourian settled there, taking a ditch out of the river opposite Phil McClure's place below the highway bridge. He was married to an Indian. Stagner Mountain in the Owl Creek Mountains is named for him.
