Origin of Name:
One of the early homesteaders there told me that the settlement was named for what the word meant. Reliance stands for reliability and being trustworthy. Another source says it was named by the railroad for the Reliance Coal mines from which they got "Dependable Coal."

Reliance Post Office was established on August 23, 1910 with Oscar Darling as postmaster. It was discontinued on August 31, 1971 after which its mail was handled by the Rock Springs Post Office.
